Wheelchair users to benifit from Government payout

Well despite all the doom and gloom surrounding the financial news something good has come from it. The Australian Government has announced a one off payment to pensioners. Single pensioners, including carers, and self-funded retirees on Commonwealth health cards will get $1400 and couples $2100 from December 8 in a lump sum. Carers will also get $1000 for each person in their care. This has prompted a noticeable rise in the enquiry rate for wheelchairs and new mobility scooters. The payment has come as a welcome relief for wheelchair and scooter users needing new equipment. Good on you Kevin Rudd, I dont agree with everything you do but this one has my tick of approval.

Wheelchairs are likely to increase in price

News is out that some importers are set to increase the prices of wheelchairs and scooters. The obvious reason being the current low value of the Australian dollar. I consider it only fair that as new imports are coming in at a higher price we can expect to have those costs passed on to us, but I really do hope that the early charge into price increases by some importers isn't a profit scooping exercise to up value their existing stock holdings. Lets hope not!

Wheelchairs still needed recession or not.

I find it amazing that most of the governments in the western world have found countless billions of dollars to bail out failing banks, yet these same governments stutter wildly everytime the question of funds for wheelchairs and equipment is raised. With technology advances electric mobility scooters and the like are transforming lives like never before. Sadly in the eyes of most that benefit from legs that work these items are often classed as a luxury. I pray that these same decision makers never need a wheelchair themselves but often wonder if maybe thats the only way to get them thinking.
